This is that time of the year when we dancers become poets,” says Bharatnatyam exponent Parimal Phadke as he talks about his latest presentation of poems through a Bharatanatyam dance performance titled Kavyanjali.

Parimal points out that every poet uses language in its entirety to evoke emotional or sensual responses. “So, when a dancer writes poetry s/he is bound to write poems which give full justice to the language of dance. Thus, Bharatnatyam will explore some very interesting Hindi poems which have been penned by me.”

Parimal’s poems are mostly unconventional — Saptasvara, Chanchal Ashva, except three which are conventional — Bhujanga and Dhyaan, Haasa Parihaasa. Parimal’s Hindi poems are set to Hindustani ragas by music composer Chaitanya Kunte, with vocals by Mayur Mahajan, Varsha Raman and Ajay Purkar. The recording of all the tracks was taken care by Amod Kulkarni of Magic Notes.

For the love of dance!

We have seen him mesmerise us with his performance on stage. This time round Bharatnatyam exponent Parimal Phadke has taken to a unique concept of dance along with Mumbai-based visual jockey and filmmaker Dhanya Pilo.

The only Puneite among six dancers across the country, Parimal was selected by The Gati Dance Forum to participate in The Yellow Line Project organised in Delhi. A not-for-profit organisation public charitable trust, Gati is both conceived and run by dancers. “They form residency programmes every year and select upcoming contemporary dancers for various projects.

When I say contemporary, it is not the ones we see every now and then, it includes dance styles of contemporary form that are futuristic and not static. They are inclined towards projects which encourage this kind of art and abstract forms,” says Parimal.

Titled Yellow Line, the project reflects the Delhi Metro. “Each dancer was paired with a filmmaker and given a site in and around the ‘yellow line’. We got the rickshaw yard. This entire routine also coincides with the capital completing 100 years of its existence.

So the theme was “The physical space of the body coinciding, effecting and non-effecting with the urban spaces. And, making that urban space a performance place for the camera.”

He further explains that it was indeed a different genre to perform for. “It is not necessary that the dance performed on stage will suit the screen. So, we underwent a five-day workshop to get the right form and create a dance for the screen.” On the

choreography and shooting in the rickshaw yard, Parimal says, “Dhanya and I wanted to challenge ourselves. With no empty spaces at the yard, we could cut ourselves away from cliches and usual choreography.

We were allotted the space and being social people were readily accepted it as it gave us a chance to interact with the rickshaw drivers The film is shot in a stop-motion format and has Parimal perform as the protagonist.

“The sleeping postures of rickshaw drivers got us to innovate with different steps and the final sequence of a drill and dancing on rickshaw bars is worth watching.”

Its interesting to see how some productions get chosen on the basis of sheer merit. I was surprised to see that MIT chose my dance production "Svarnim" for their inaugral function. Quite an abstract production compared to my other productions.

Time and again I have realised the audience wants to see visuals which make them think , which gives them an opportunity to interpret .

The yellow line project an initiative of Gati Dance Forum resulted in a short film titled "Dudro" made by Dhanya Pilo ( filmmaker) and me. The following snaps are from the film "Dudro" .

The Yellow Line Project (YLP) invited collaborations between choreographers and media artists to explore the intersections between dance, film and public spaces in Delhi.

The focus of the dance-films will be Public Spaces in Delhi. Each project was created around a specific urban site in Delhi, be it a heritage site, a foot bridge, pavement or a construction site. The content and intention of the dance and the way it was filmed, therefore, was in constant dialogue with and shaped by the history and physicality of the chosen site.

Performed recently at the Balajitemple on 26th of Jan . One of the most memorable moments in my life primarily because I performed an impromptu Mallari in Rupaka Taalam and Gambheera Nattai Raagam.

When I found that the temple has Naagaswaram and Tavil players within for their service. I asked for their permission if we could do a mallari together in the temple. I got 5 minutes to know what the pattern was and we began the performance with the imromptu mallari . I'll always remember this day of my life , never get an opportunity to be so "on the spot".

Another interesting piece of news is , my student Omkar Shinde has been selected for the top 12 finalists of Dance India Dance reality dance show. The initial three rounds they performed my choreography on a tamil song of a.r.rehman. His dance partner is Akshata Thike . So watch out for Dance India dance on Zee Tv , the first episode will be telecast on ZEE on 31st December

पुणे - अनंतकाळापासून सर्जनशीलता, कणखरता आणि वत्सलतेने जगाला व्यापून राहिलेल्या समर्थ स्त्रीत्वाचे पैलू बुधवारी "शक्ती' या कार्यक्रमातून उलगडले. कधी दुर्गा, महिषासुरमर्दिनी, सरस्वती, तर कधी मुक्ताबाई, जिजाऊ, अहिल्यादेवी आणि सावित्री अशा मानवी रूपांमध्ये प्रकटणाऱ्या या स्त्रीत्वाला उपस्थितांनी मनापासून वंदन केले.

'सकाळ रसिक परिवारा'चा या वर्षातील शेवटचा कार्यक्रम नयनरम्य अशा नृत्याविष्कारातून स्त्री सामर्थ्याचे दर्शन घडवून गेला. प्रसिद्ध नृत्यरचनाकार परिमल फडके यांच्या संकल्पनेतून साकारलेल्या या उत्स्फूर्त आविष्काराला रसिकांनी तितकीच समरसून दाद दिली. लावण्य, बुद्धी, उत्पत्ती, लय आणि ऊर्जा या शब्दांचा अर्थ परिमल फडके डान्स ग्रुपच्या पंधरा नर्तक कलावंतांनी अप्रतिम पदन्यास आणि भावमुद्रांतून उलगडला.

'जय शारदे वागेश्‍वरी', "आईचा जोगवा जोगवा मागेन', "उदे गं अंबे उदे', "गोंधळ मांडला भवानी गोंधळाला ये', "आल्या पाच गवळणी', "तू शूरवीर भद्र त्रिनेत्र शिवरुद्र' या रचनांवरील नृत्यांना टाळ्यांच्या गजरात दाद मिळाली.

कार्यक्रमाच्या उत्तरार्धात संत मुक्ताबाई, मातुःश्री जिजाऊ, पार्वतीबाई पेशवे, अहिल्याबाई होळकर आणि सावित्रीबाई फुले या महाराष्ट्राच्या समर्थ पंचकन्यांना अनुक्रमे आकाशतत्त्व, सूर्यतत्त्व, क्षमातत्त्व, जलतत्त्व आणि वायुतत्त्व ही "थीम' घेऊन सादर करण्यात आले. पंचकन्यांच्या या स्मरणगाथेतून स्त्रीच्या खंबीर आत्मभानाचे दर्शन घडविण्यात आले. या सर्व स्त्रीरूपांच्या एकत्र सादरीकरणाने कार्यक्रमाची सांगता झाली. लोकनृत्याचा भाग रत्नाकर शेळके डान्स ऍकॅडमीच्या कलाकारांनी सादर केला.

कार्यक्रमाच्या पूर्वार्धात या उपक्रमाबाबत "सकाळ'चे संपादक सुरेशचंद्र पाध्ये म्हणाले, 'गेली दोन वर्षे सकाळ रसिक परिवाराच्या माध्यमातून जो पाठिंबा मिळाला, त्यासाठी रसिकांचे आभार. अलीकडे कुटुंबव्यवस्था मोडकळीस आल्याचे जाणवते. ती जपण्यासाठी विविध पातळ्यांवर होणाऱ्या प्रयत्नांप्रमाणेच "सकाळ'ने हा छोटासा प्रयत्न केला. या उपक्रमाचे सदस्यत्व कोणा एका व्यक्तीऐवजी संपूर्ण परिवाराला देण्यामागे सर्वांनी वेळ काढून एकत्र यावे, अशी भूमिका होती. या परिवारातून एक मोठा परिवार सांधण्याचा हेतू होता. पुणेकर रसिक जाणकार, चोखंदळ आणि संस्कृतीचा विचार करणारे आहेत. यापुढेही "सकाळ' कलासक्त रसिकांना विविध उपक्रमांमध्ये सामावून घेणार आहे. या वर्षातील शेवटचा "शक्ती' कार्यक्रम खऱ्या अर्थाने सर्व क्षेत्रांत अग्रेसर असणाऱ्या स्त्रीत्वाचे दर्शन देणारा आहे. परंपरेने आपण स्त्री-शक्तीची पूजा बांधतोय, तरी प्रत्यक्षात त्यांना दुय्यम स्थान मिळतेय, ही खेदाची बाब आहे.''

फडके म्हणाले, 'कोणताही मोठा प्रयोग साकारताना त्यामागे असणाऱ्या "टीम'ची मेहनत महत्त्वाची असते. "सकाळ'ने दिलेला पाठिंबा प्रेरणादायी होता.'' रत्नाकर शेळके, फडके आणि डॉ. राहुल देशपांडे यांचा पाध्ये यांच्या हस्ते सत्कार करण्यात आला. सूत्रसंचालन देशपांडे यांनी केले.

Students of Parimal Phadke, Bharatanatyam dancer have made Pune proud by winning two major dance competitions from Mumbai..

The Svar Sadhana Samiti Bharatanatyam juniors dance competition was won by Komal Surve , 12 year old budding talented student of Shri Parimal Phadke,

The Dadar Matunga Juniors Bharatanatyam Dance Competition was won by Durga Tilak , 12 year old Bharatnatyam student of Shri Parimal Phadke.

Archana Jadhav won the second prize in the seniors category of Dadar Matunga Bharatanatyam Choreography Competition.

Even the local dance competitions have been in then kitty of Parimal Performing Arts and Research Centre, the Bharatnatyam dance academy which is run in three venues—

Aksharnandan School , Senapati Bapat Road.
Seva Sadan English Medium School ,Erandwane
Sahanishtha Society ,Sahakarnagar

The local Bharatnatyam dance competitions were also won by students of Parimal Peforming Arts and Research Centre.

Bharatnatyam Junior dance competition conducted by the Prerana Foundation Juniors was fully won by students of Parimal Phadke

The first went to Durga Tilak , second to Vaishnavi Gire and the third to Asmita Satpathy. The seniors category in the same in the same competition was won by Manasi Fatak.

Sindhoja , a sri lankan student learning under Parimal won the second prize at the Harmony Intercollegiate Bharatanatyam Dance Competition.

So In all the students have won 8 prizes at these prestigious Bharatanatyam Dance Competitions. A record in a span of 2 months which no other Bharatanatyam Dance Institute can boast of.

The reason for this success is Quality Control. Shri Parimal Phadke is ably assisted by Saee Shetye , Manasi Fatak and Sneha Pandit who contribute to keeping the quality of the dancers intact. The students are encouraged to take theory classes and understand the deeper relation between theory and practice. The academy is ints 5th year and , such a feat in such a short span is remarkable. Shri Parimal Phadke also gives credit to the parents of the students who give whole hearted co-operation in bringing up their children, making the students aware of their inner strengths and fully supporting them in their endeavours.

Performed on the 6th of Novemeber with the troupe of Guru Dr.Uma Anantani ( alumni of Nalanda College in Mumbai).

We performed rite in the middle of Kutch ( Rann of Kutch). The experience was memorable, something akin to performing in the artics .....no vegetation around just white salt soil.....We actually witnessed the sunset and the moonsrise happening simultaneously.

At such times I realise there is a vast geographical treasure in India.....one of those got unravelled rite before my eyes that day....

Wanted to share a gr8 news. My student Manasi Limaye has won the Sharada Sangeet Vidyalaya competition at bandra . She has also secured 77% marks thus winning the Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar Puraskar .....I won it in 1998 and she wins it in 2008. This is one of the most proud moments for me as a Teacher of dance.

Kaleidoscope -- The performance

The performance of Kaleidoscope was met with amazing response. People liked Bharata Nrityam , Bharatanatyam and the contemporary sections of Kaleidoscope. While it was my first full fledged performance of Bharatanrityam. People loved the choreography of birds and metaphors.

What was most surprising for me is the round of applause for "Dilemma" and "Twins" which I thought were quite erudite pieces of choreography. So it was nice to see that the audience is opening up to contemporary choreography.

And yes , there was a big Half page review with pics in Dna . So that was the crowning of the show!

Hi all,

It's been a while since I have written anything. To begin with -- 1) My performance titled "Gems of Margam" was a big success in Mumbai for the ICCR Horizons festival. Mumbai Mirror featured a preview , the preview was an interesting one , except that there was a quote which I supposedly gave which goes like this -" Bharatanatyam has lot of erotic dances , but not all of them is bhakti ." Folks! am I so superficial that I can say something like this .....besides that will I use such "Lame " Language.

I remember correctly , the journalist asked me a question related to my article -- Nayika Bheda-s -- aka pamper the male ego , which deals with the reflection of women and their status and exposes the fact that it treats women as objects of lust and beauty. With relation to this I said that the medieval poetry is full of erotic content and that is also the time we see the Bhakti element reaching its prime but not all erotic content is bhakti and vice versa.

If the journalist finds it difficult to digest this why don't they just stick to reporting!!

My production "kaleidoscope" was met with a very good response with everybody reacting ver positively ....the clips would be uploaded by next week on you tube!!

Choreography: If you want typical, it's not for you

Part 1: What it takes to be a professional dancer

How many times have you watched those reality shows and said, "Oh, to be a choreographer!"

However, as easy as it may seem to be shooting instructions at people, choreography is not just about dance, it's about understanding dance well enough to teach and direct someone else.

This is another career option that has opened up new possibilities for youngsters.

We spoke to Parimal Phadke, who started off on his own but now has assistants who manage shows. According to Parimal, he is inundated with requests for shows and functions.

Here he answers a few questions on how one can make a comfortable living while doing what one loves.

According to Parimal, choreography can be divided into two categories -- working with an ensemble and solo performances. "If we are talking in terms of ensemble then basically a choreographer needs to be able to execute dance through an group presentation.

"If we are taking a solo dancer then it would mean constructing the dance piece using a particular form for a particular content," he elaborates, "If we take Bollywood into consideration then we can define choreography as interpreting the various songs which weave the plot of a film through solo, duet, trio or an ensemble."

What are the requisites to be a good dance choreographer? Who can be a good choreographer?
Here's what a good choreographer needs to be and have:

A good dancer: The choreographer has to have a good dance technique. S/he may not be a good performer (if one is then it is an added advantage). The choreographer needs to be a good model for his dancers and if he isn't a good dancer he might not be able to recreate on the stage what he has in mind. This leads to the next requisite...

A good teacher and instructor: The choreographer needs to be a good teacher since that will help extract the best from the dancers.

An intelligent visualiser: Being a choreographer myself, my first step towards creating any dance piece is visualising and notating what I visualise before I teach the choreography.

A good sense of music and rhythm: A choreographer without a good sense of music is a lion without teeth. S/he needs to be well acquainted with several musical and rhythm styles to make the choreography unique.

A good command over languages: A Bollywood choreographer should definitely have a good command over languages. Saroj Khan or Vaibhavi Merchant are good choreographers because they understand the emotional content of the lyrics and interpret the songs correctly. To cite an example, Crazy Kiya Re from Dhoom 2 [Images] is unique because the movements of the lyrics show how the heroine is love-struck and the choreography explains this state.

A good director: The choreographer works with a whole team, thus s/he needs to know the skills needed to work with a group. Keeping the group intact and satisfied is one big challenge since at some point every dancer will ultimately plan to move out to have his or her own group.

Knowledge of all the genres: The choreography should be multifaceted, having fair amount of knowledge of classical, semi-classical and popular genres of dance and music. Besides that the choreographer also needs to have a fair knowledge of costume, lights, set design as that will help his choreography have an edge over others.

Is it a lucrative profession today?
It is indeed a lucrative profession. The avenues range from choreographing for schools/ international schools/ colleges, companies, event management agencies etc.

Some years ago dance was considered taboo in the middle class. It's doesn't seem to be like that anymore. Have people opened up to dance choreography as a profession?
With the onslaught of several reality dance shows, the field of dance choreography has suddenly become glamorous. So parents have opened up to the idea of their kids learning any form of dance.

I still feel, however, that they have not yet opened to the idea of dance choreography as a profession since it is not a systematic profession -- one can't really plot one's career graph like other professions one is aware of the progress, such as a journalist moves on to the post of a sub-editor and finally editor.

How was your journey as a choreographer? Did you have trouble establishing yourself in the industry?
I have been working as a choreographer for a decade now. I started with choreographing for theatre and eventually shifted for choreographing several events and corporate functions. I didn't face trouble because probably I was prepared to choreograph a classical number on one hand and have been at ease in choreographing a Bollywood or a contemporary dance number on the other.

I was already a known classical dancer in Pune so shifting to choreography was not really difficult since I had the right contacts and the right time.

What remuneration can a dance choreographer expect starting out?
It depends upon your status and the budget of the client. You start normally with Rs 10,000-15,000. Once you gain experience, depending upon the project, fees can range from Rs 25,000 to even Rs 1 lakh.

Mumbai is the showbiz hot seat. How do smaller towns fare when it comes to dance choreography?
As far as Pune goes, I get two events every month to choreograph and the budget ranges from Rs 25,000-50,000.

Do you choreograph for private parties, sangeets, etc?
I have done such work but that was say five years back. Now I have my assistants who take care of that and I focus on the corporate events, which are more innovative, have a different class of people to watch and are far better in terms of budget.

Your base is classical. How does it affect modern dance choreography?
To put it simply, a classical dancer can choreograph a western and Bollywood number, but vice versa is not possible. Classical dance equips you with everything; you can fit yourself in all genres of dance and music.

As a choreographer, my base in classical gives me a big palette of dance movements that I can utilise for choreography.

What is the future for a dance choreographer? How many years can a dance choreographer continue with the profession?
The sky is the limit. Answering it practically, everything finally depends on the economy -- we have more brands, we have more events, we have more corporate funding and also good funding for films will keep the flame of the choreographer alive. About the retirement age, are you kidding? You retire as a dancer; you never retire as a choreographer.

When should you ideally branch out into choreography? What is the typical path?
One should begin when one feels one has gained enough knowledge in terms of forms/ styles of dance. There is nothing typical in performing arts. If you want something typical you are not made for this profession!

Any words of advice?
Judge your choreography not just by your own judgments!
